Advisory applies to: PHOENIX ICE HV 120

Testing with a pro heli pilot late last week allowed Castle engineers to determine that the performance specifications of certain electronic components used in the Phoenix Ice HV 120 ESCs may have changed between production runs. ESCs built using the out-of-specification components are more susceptible to failure when used with some combinations of motor and battery; and then only in certain applications. Fewer than 3% of the Phoenix Ice HV 120s produced to date have been returned for service of any kind.

Our engineering staff has been working with one of our component suppliers to design and manufacture a custom component that is much more tolerant of the loads encountered with today's batteries and motors. Phoenix Ice HV 120 controllers modified to use samples of those new components performed flawlessly in extreme applications where the Ice HV 120s built with the current component failed repeatedly. We are confident that this modification will make the Ice HV 120 controller a much more durable ESC – one worthy of the Castle name.

Customers with Phoenix Ice HV 120 controllers are asked to return them to Castle for this free modification.

We are currently working to determine the availability of the new components in production quantities. We are hopeful that we can have them supplied to us sometime in the week of July 18, 2011.

We will be able to make a more definite estimate of the turn-around time for these modifications and offer you specific instructions for the return procedure once we secure these components.

OPMERKING
Op verschillende forums zijn ze nogal critisch over deze service bulletin. En de verdere info die er is vrijgegeven. Dus of dit echt de oplossing is voor de problemen is nog maar de vraag.
Daarnaast zeggen ze dat maar 3% van de controllers terug kwam met problemen. Vraag hierbij is hoeveel procent van de 10000 geproduceerde eenheden in helis zat en dus hoeveel % van de controllers die in helis gebruikt werd ging in vlammen op.

Is een beetje vaag allemaal..pas nu het bij hun zelf met testen fout gaat, gaan ze er verder naar zoeken. Lijkt me sterk dat ze het gooien op onderdelen die gebruikt zijn buiten specificatie..

Ook is niet duidelijk wat ze er nu mee gaan doen. Blijkt dat je gelijk een andere ESC terugkrijgt als je de jouwe opstuurt. Heb er nog geen antwoord op dit nu een nieuwe is of een gerepareerde gebruikte..
Schijnt dat je wel al je gesoldeerde stekkers eraf moet/mag halen,
omdat je wel degelijk een andere terugkrijgt zonder stekkers.

Zaterdag zal ik eens kijken of de mannen van Castle op de 3DM er wat meer
over kunnen melden, wellicht dat ze eventueel al kant en klare hebben liggen..

Verder mag ik zeggen dat ik zeer tevreden ben over m'n 120HV.

Hello all,

While Castle takes all controller failures seriously, many have felt that our response to the incidences of failures in our Phoenix Ice 120HV was taking too long. We didn't make any official statements as we couldn't identify any particular pattern or cause for the failures. Our Repair Dept. keeps track of our returns - for any reason -- and the returns of the 120HV were actually very low; less than 3%. We generally see more than that rate of return just from crash damage unrelated to the controllers. Given that we've produced more than 10,000 of these controllers, a low percentage of failure still results in a lot of upset customers.
We've recently determined that some, again some, setups stress particular components in a way that causes the controllers to fail instantly. The failure mode allows a complete short circuit to occur. Our controllers are designed to carry high currents with as little resistance as possible. This is advantageous when the controllers are operating properly, but this leads to extreme currents and heat when the controllers fail. As the ICE controllers are encapsulated in metal heatsinks, this heat is further concentrated such that physical injuries or property damage may occur.
Our engineers have tested a hardware modification that greatly reduces the risk of this particular failure. We do not recommend using Phoenix Ice 12HV controllers until they have been modified to this new standard.

Please return any 120HV controllers that you may have for one that has this modification. There will be no charge for this exchange.

NOTE: For purposes of fast turnaround, you will be sent another Phoenix Ice HV 120 controller. Remove all connectors, etc. from your ESC before shipping as they will not be returned with your replacement controller.
Our Technical Support and Repair staff do not have any additional information, calling them will only lead to additional frustration for all involved. We will advise you via email of the expected shipment date for your return.

vandaag toch maar besloten om mijn 2 regelaars los te halen en op te sturen
dus verloopig niet vliegen daar alles bij mij op castle 120 hv loopt
ben benieuwd hoe snel ze omgeruild worden

Ik wist niet dat ze inmiddels ook een Europees adres hebben en heb van het weekend de boel net opgestuurd naar de States.

Mij benieuwen hoe lang het gaat duren, hopelijk niet te lang.

heb te snel gereageerd...dit is het resultaat met mijn nieuwe esc...
10 seconden in de lucht en volledig opgefikt...
Denk dat ze bij crapcreations toch eens moeten gaan nadenken, er komt in ieder geval terug een kontronik op...deze zooi hoef ik niet meer. Je betaalt dan wel wat, maar je kunt vliegen ook dan...nu sta ik steeds aan de kant met opgefikte heli...
