A very nice outrunner (lrk, not cd-rom!) animation, showing why the the magnets rotate seven times slower than the magnetic field:

The above animation too is simpiflied for clarity, it shows only two coils (one phase) activated whereas in reality 4 coils (two phases) are active. It does not change the principle, the magnetic field makes 30degrees steps whereas the rotor makes 8,57 degree steps. Explained here:
