Lipo packs and swelling

Hi All,

I've just started using the kokam packs on my Pic V2. I have a 11.1v 1500mah 3 cell and a 11.1 3 cell 2000 mah. The 1500mah has swollen a bit after a few charges and since im new to LiPo's im not sure how much swelling is cause for concern.

Ive taken a few photos of a brand new pack with the slightly swollen one next to it for comparison. The larger pack has not been charged at all yet. Its fresh out of the package and has only had leads attached.

Could some of you that have alot of experience with these packs have a look and let me know if this amount of swelling is cause for concern.

Please give all the information about how you have charged the battery, (chargertype, amps, )

Ill give as much as i can. Ikarus makes a long duration flight set which consists of a charger, battery, and tuning motor. This is the charger i have used. here is a link to the charger:

I have checked with Quartel B.V. in pijnacker where i have bought everything to date and they said they use the same charger for these batteries. I cant tell you the amperage this charger charges at but you can set the voltage to various settings. I have it set to 12.6V. It automatically shuts off when the battery is done charging so im not sure how long i charged it either. somewhere near 2 hours each time i imagine is how long it took.

They really shouldn't be swelling at all, not even a bit...seems to me the charger cuts off too late. I would set the charger to 12.5 for the future, to be on the safe side

Update: I've charged and discharged it a few more times now and seems to be stable. I'm going to be very careful with these and if anything bad happens I'll document it and post here in case anyone cares to know :)
 
You can use this cells without a problem, but be very careful storing them unattended. Be sure they are on a save place. They may ignite...
And, don’t charge the cells in the heli. Another mistake from the charger and you have a plastic blob instead of a heli ;)
 
I think the chance a swollen pack ignites is very small. I’ve heard story’s of guys using a swollen penetrated pack for month’s without a problem ( not the full capacity anymore of course ).
But, I've also heard story’s about exploding lipo’s after a crash, bad charging… exploding cell phones…
Usually, if there’s something wrong and they ignite as result of that, it happens in a time period from immediately to 15 minutes. After 15 minutes it’s probably all right. But “probably” isn’t the insurance you want ;)

What if the internal circuitry in the pack is damaged by the swelling. And the pack shrinks back in the next couple of hours / days. And this causes a internal short-cut because the 2 poles got together in the shrinking process…

Can’t be to careless with these things. So, keep them on a fire-save place.
 
The swelling is the result of an internal gas-build-up.
It cannot be reversed.
Surely, after a peiod of time the internal over-pressure wil fade (leak) very slowly and thus the danger of bursting/exploding in flames will diminish. As Satoer mentioned, the danger is by far more present when charging and the during hte period right after charging.
Of course, internal damage to the circuit cannot be excluded in case of crashing and or overcharging (which you probably did).
You ARE taking a risk (probably small) when you continue to use this battery pack. It just might short circuit, cause a huge gas build-up, and burst into flames. Not a pretty sight.

Whenever pssible, convince "Q" to retake his battery pack, and supply you with a new one or demand a refund.
It's not worth taking that risk.
 
It blows because it's charged the wrong way. Not by the fact its swollen ;)

Lipo`s zijn voor mij ook nieuw en ik heb nog geen problemen of zwellingen gehad.
Laatst kocht ik een nieuw 3s 1500 pack voor mijn piccolo en de verkoper van Q adviseerde mij er geen krimpkous omheen te doen omdat het pack een beetje krimpt en uitzet tijdens het laad en ontlaadproces.
Daarom dacht ik dat het normaal was.
 
bij quartel sporen ze niet helemaal maar dat is hier onderhand wel bekend op het forum.
 
Het is duidelijk dat je moet niet spelen met lipo's en nu heb ik een "proper charger" gekocht (robbe power peak infinity) en veel meer geleesd over de juiste manier om je accus te laden ofzo. Hoopelijk geen problemen maar van wat ik heb geleesd 99% van het problemen komt tijdens het laden dus doe ik alles in een flowerpot met een deksel :)
 
Juist ! ze verkopen geen treintjes bij Quartel, wel lipo`s en toch vind ik de acordeonachtige opbouw van de pakketten passen in het verhaal.

Ik ga het pakket meten met de schuifmaat voor en na het laden.

Neeeee, niet zo snel als je denkt...ik heb in nederland al 5 jaar geweest maar sommige dingen vind ik moelijk om nederlands over te praten... ik heb al gezegt dat ik kan .nl lezen en begrijpen (meestal) maar ik spreek en schrijf het niet zo goed. :) Maar dat komt ook omdat ik een beetje lazy bent en bijna iedereen hier spreek goed engels.
