As most of you will know, the Vario "bell" with inner teeth is not state of the art any longer. Especially with the powerfull electro motors like Scorpion 4035 or Pyro 700-52, the teeth are simply not strong enough and will give up some day.
My Vario Bell 413 with 4-blade head, Pyro 700-52 and electro conversion kit (described earlier in this forum) killed the teeth within 2 hours of flight. Fortunately it happened only 60cm above ground and only the landing gear broke.

As my friend and myself make a DirectDrive and a BeltDrive conversion especially for the Skyfox mechanic, this was the reason to make our own gearbox.

Unfortunatelly the parts needed for this gearbox are pretty expensive and our friend who were interested in such a gearbox finally took the risk to fly with the weak original gearbox.

Now we have decided to do the following: We use all part from the Vario gearbox and modify them, so that they can be used in the new gearbox. This brings the price down by more than 50%.

The gearbox is available for DirectDrive (Motor pinion - Delrin (POM) wheel) and also for the BeltDrive (Motor pinion - belt - aluminium wheel). The parts in use are HTD (HighTorque quality).

If you are interested in more details you can contact me by e-mail bergfeld.r@t-online.de. Also feel free to have a look at my homepage which gives plenty of information, images and video clips.

Good day,

It might not be state of the art anymore (and I fully agree on that) but obviously you are overlooking the fact, that installing more power than ever intended for these mechanics, is just simply useless.

A scale helicopter does not need a vertical rate of climb of more than 5 m/sec, and for that kind of power, the Bell Gear is adequate.

If installing more power is not to be avoided, it makes more sense to install a completely different mechanics (such as X-treme) or any other mechanics of your choice. THis because the SkyFox is mainly geardriven and thus produces a lot of mechanical noise anyway, a fully belt driven mechanics would be the more obvious choice anyway.

Your Bell 413 will fly perfectly well with 2000 Watt or even less. It might be wise to just limit your installed power, instead of beefing up mechanics, because beefing up one point, will inevitably reveal the next weak link, and before you know it, you will have built a complete "new" mechanics.

Brgds, Bert

EDIT: how the hell do you manage to ruin a bell gear at a height of only 60 cm? Considering that is just hoovering height, and whichever way you turn it, hoovering takes just approx 1500 Watt, regardless of the installed capacity....

Like Bruteforce says in the next post, you are inventing a solution for a problem that never existed in the first place, but was created by the brainless (and useless) wish for more power....

In 25 years of Heim/Vario flying I've never had any troubles with the "bell" as you describe and I have run the Actro 32-3 MAX and Align 700M/MX motors at full chat thru them without any problems at all. I recently found that the white plastic "bells" are weaker as they are intended for an 8,5ccm motor but as I have always used the black Vario parts it wasn't ever a problem. So IMHO you've found a solution for a problem that doesn't need to exist.

Pssst Marco: the "white bell"was not intended for 8.5 ccm but for 10 ccm.... but that was 20 years ago, and engines have become stronger in the run of time....

A Rossi R53 delivers 1.95 HP, while 20 years back, a Webra .60 or OS .60 or equivalent delivered about just that too.....

Meanwhile, the mechanics changed little bit too (from hanging mechanics to SF mechanics) which influenced temperature exposure of gears slightly as well....
