Maximum transmitter power?

Hi guys,

Sorry, I don't really speak Dutch, just staying in NL for a while, though can read it a bit..

So here is my question: I'm building a new FPV plane and wondering - what is the *legally* allowed maximum Tx power in the Netherlands for frequencies 900MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz? I guess it's 200mW  Please, advice!

Thanks!

Dave

Thanks! It seems ridiculously low... I guess my WiFi router has something around 100mW.. and afaik Futaba TXs are all up to 750mW (allowed maximum in US). So is it prohibited to run those appliances here?.. Or for ham licensed only?..

Thanks!

edit: Was a (funny) reaction to Roel's post about American women...

Dutch people are in general not that easily offended, we are not used to Americans on this forum ;)

No guys, I'm serious.. Can you please clarify - if there are so tight limits, how do you manage to run your FPV and radio controls at all? Is it illegal stuff but nobody cares? or do you all have ham licenses?..

I just don't want to be caught by police and get fined by 2,000 euros like the guy in the next thread here (if I understood it right).

Please, explain! Thank you!!!

ps: and I DO agree - Euro-ladies are much nicer ;)

I'm sorry, is it a new trend for folks with no prior posts to their name to start discussions about the legality of FPV flying?

Your questions seem to tie in with concerns raised by another member who allegedly has received a fine and had his equipment confiscated due to not having a HAM license. The fact that you refer to his post/thread would indicate to me that apparently you read Dutch?

Either way, your question has been answered already by several people participating in this topic.

To answer your question about FPV flying whilst staying within legal limits, the answer is antenna gain and lots of it, preferably in combination with a tracking antenna. The combination will guarantee line of sight between transmitter at all times hence enabling good range to be achieved even with low power transmitters.

To put matters into perspective: I've personally been out well past 3km with a legal 10mW 2.4GHz video transmitter using a stock 35MHz radio for RC control.

Noticed same , Sander

And then the next step the thread is going to be locked down by a mod :-)
we just need to be patient.... hihi

Hi Sander,

Thanks for your reply, very appreciated. I've already mentioned in my first post that I can follow Dutch a little and you may probably know about Google Translate.. I'm sorry, but I personally don't see anything wrong, strange, stupid or that funny to ask a simple question - how legally is your hobby here and how do you cope with such a tight limit. Most of answers are: yeah.. we are more with drugs.. you americans are fat and stupid.. eh, who are you to ask us this question.. What's wrong with you mates? Why are you so angry and irritated? Next time I would rather contact Agentschap Telecom directly to find out the rules here and I'd prefer to talk to much friendly people on other boards like rcgroups.com or so.

And for those hardly laughing at americans - if you guys ever come to Vodafone HQ or to native Dutch Tomtom or any else large and hi-tech company - you would be amazed to see that most of engineers here are "stupid" americans, british, german and whoever else expats, who provide your smart and intelligent nation with all these technologies you use daily. So, keep typing on your american invented keyboard and pc how stupid we are.

Regards,
David

Thanks for your reply, very appreciated.

You're welcome.

Not sure what prompted the replies of the others, however you couldn't have picked a less convenient time to ask about legality issues with FPV in Holland.

If you plan on using your US bought RC radio here please be aware that it cannot legally be used. You either have a RC radio operating on 50/72MHz and unfortunately those frequencies are not available for use or you own a US bought 2.4GHz RC radio. Even with FCC approval this RC radio will be illegal to use as the output power is higher than the equivalent EU models.

Putting things into perspective: in reality the risks of getting caught with either are low, as are any problems caused by the use of this equipment, but it is up to you to take the risk. I wouldn't recommend using a RC radio on 50/72MHz. However a US bought 2.4GHz radio will, despite the higher output power, not quickly cause for red flags to be raised due to interference as it transmits on an already very polluted frequency band.

Hope that helps, fly safe!

Hi David,

I am even working for an American based company so no need for explaination :-) I think we never said ( as fas as I can see) that you are stupid.
Probally our/my bad "sense" of humor ?
I was the one starting this stupid pictures, but it seemed to match your expectations about our stuff here in EU at that time.
Sorry for that.

We have had a lot of discussions on this board already, about legal and illegal stuff and many of then have been closed by a moderator due to the atmosphere in it.

Together with the last item, as Sander mentioned, the timing was a bit unfortunate.

Take into account a €2000 fine and all is complete....

Appologies.

Frank

Sorry!

I removed what İs not funny.
Just thought you where playing with us.
Welcome to tiny Holland!

In time, if you stay here long enough, you'll notice that that behaviour and bickering is a general trend in Dutch forums. You are also likely to have many encounters with the Spelling Gestapo when you first attempt to write in Dutch, not necessarily here, but in other Dutch forums for sure, where your posts will be treated as stupid or invalid just because you can't write in their language with perfect spelling and grammar. I'm an expatriate myself (but not from your country) and I too generally prefer to post in foreign forums such as rcgroups for the same reason you stated. Notice how I don't mention where I'm from: take that as advice or you'll frequently get the same bucketload dropped on you as you did this time.

Thankfully there are some good people here who do post concise and intelligent answers based on the questions asked.

The 2nd post should answer your question for what's allowed from the air. From the ground the max power is 100mw on 2.4ghz a.f.a.i.k. For the rest, Sander gave sound advice.

Good luck,
Craig
