Antwoord pauzeplaatje:

CURTISS XA-8

The Curtiss XA-8 was designed in response to an Army Air Corps requirement for an attack aircraft to replace the Curtiss Falcon series in service since 1927. The Curtiss Model 59 Shrike was designated as XA-8 by the Air Corps (the Shrike nickname was not adopted by the Army).

The XA-8 was a low-wing monoplane of all-metal construction. The Curtiss V-1570C Conqueror engine drove a 3-blade fixed-pitch propeller powered the aircraft. The pilot sat in a fully enclosed cockpit while the observer gunner had a semi-enclosed cockpit aft of the pilot. The rear of the gunner's cockpit was open to allow for the single .30-cal. machine gun on a flexible mount used for rear defense. The pilot controlled four .30-cal. machine guns mounted in the landing gear fairings. The aircraft was also designed to carry up to four 122-pound bombs.

The XA-8 competed against the Atlantic-Fokker XA-7 for the Army construction contract. Both aircraft were of similar design; however, the wing of the XA-8 was considerably thinner than the XA-7 wing. To meet the necessary wing design strength requirements, the XA-8 used external bracing wires and struts on the upper and lower wing surfaces. The XA-8 wing also incorporated leading edge slats and trailing edge flaps.

Only one XA-8 was built, but after the aircraft won the competition against the XA-7, five service test models were ordered as YA-8. An additional order for eight more Y1A-8 service test aircraft followed. After testing, most of these aircraft entered operational service and re-designated A-8. The XA-8 remained a test and restricted use aircraft until it was scrapped in early 1937.

On 20 June 1941, the United States Navy placed an order with the Douglas Aircraft Company for two prototypes of a new two-seat dive bomber to replace both the Douglas SBD Dauntless and the new Curtiss SB2C Helldiver, designated XSB2D-1. The resulting aircraft, designed by a team led by Ed Heinemann, was a large single-engined mid-winged monoplane. It had a laminar flowgull-wing, and unusually for a carrier-based aircraft of the time, a tricycle undercarriage. It was fitted with a bomb bay and underwing racks for up to 4,200 lb (1,900 kg), while defensive armament consisted of two wing-mounted 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon and two remote-controlled turrets, each with two .50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns. The prototype first flew on 8 April 1943, demonstrating excellent performance, being much faster and carrying nearly double the bombload of the Helldiver, and orders for 358 SB2D-1s quickly followed. The U.S. Navy changed its requirements, however, wanting single-seat carrier-based torpedo/dive bombers without defensive turrets, and Douglas reworked the SB2D by removing the turrets and second crewman, while adding more fuel and armor, producing the BTD-1 Destroyer. The orders for SB2Ds were converted to BTD-1s, with the first BTD flying on 5 March 1944.

Operational history

The first production BTD-1s were completed in June 1944. By the time
Japan surrendered in August 1945, only 28 aircraft had been delivered, and production was cancelled, along with other aircraft types that had been designed from the start as single-seaters, such as the Martin AM Mauler. None saw combat action. In any event, Heinemann and his team were already working on developing the single-seat BT2D that became the Douglas A-1 Skyraider.

De volgende weer aan jou.

Ik moest best wel lang zoeken Ramses. Je had een goede foto gekozen waarin de kist heel anders overkomt.

Beetje in dezelfde richting is mijn nieuwe opdracht.

Bell P-63F

p63-11a.jpg

The P-63F featured an enlarged vertical stabilizer and rudder. The sole surviving P-63F is owned by the Commemorative Air Force with the registration number N6763

The P-63E was identical to the D model, except it reverted back to the traditional canopy and automobile-type doors. Thirteen P-63Es were completed with a contract for an additional 2,930 aircraft, but this was canceled after VJ-Day. Two P-63F models were completed and powered by an Allison V-1710-135 producing 1,425 hp. The F model had an enlarged vertical stabilizer and rudder for improved longitudinal stability. One P-63F survived the war and now resides with the Commemorative Air Force.

Er is 1 exemplaar van gebouwd en heeft meerdere vluchten gemaakt. Dit enkele exemplaar heeft de oorlog overleeft. Het kwam kort daarna aan een bizar einde...
