Nieuwe zenders FRSKY X9D X12D X16D

Hello,

I hope this is the right thread to post... If not, please forgive me and point me in the right direction.

I've got a Taranis Plus radio which I bought off HK. I'd like to perform certain modifications to the radio and the power supply...Unfortunately I was standing in another queue when they were handing out electronics knowledge and soldering skills...

I'm looking for someone or some place where I could get the Antenna mod for the Taranis as well as change the plugs on the LiFe battery I got for it, plus any other modifications that are recommended for this radio.

Right now I'm using the radio to fly my Phantom 2 ( I know, I know...) but within 2 weeks I'll receive a custom built FPV racer my buddy built for me back in the old country, and I plan using it for all my future models.

Your help and patience with me is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Janek,

Where do you live? You can put that info in your profile so it shows up next to every post you do. Very useful when asking questions like this.

Why do you want to do those mods?

Hi Emanuel,

The Antenna mod will allow for installation of stronger antennas to increase signal strength. The battery modification is so that you can use a LiFe battery for longer operation than with the included stock NiMH battery.
I'm also interested in any other useful mods for this radio. Somewhere down the line I will be installing an LRS module in it but in the meantime I'd like to be able to squeeze as much as possible out of what's in the Taranis.

Stock 2000 mah battery will run all day, there are not many situations where you would need more. The antenna mod is not needed if you use the long range receiver. Stock receivers will get you to about 1.5 km of range. Some users have demonstrated over 3km with stock antenna and X8R receiver. With the long range receiver people have reached over 6 km.

Before you do any improvements on your Taranis I would advise to check how well it performs in standard form. You may be surprised.

Emanuel,

Thank you for the advice, however I think I still want to do these mods. The LRS will not work with all models, and I'm currently experiencing only 1/3rd of the range I had with the original TX/RX combo. I'm using a X8R-II rx installed in the Phantom.
As for the battery, better to have 2 power supply choices than 1. The Taranis came without a charger and I travel a lot - It's much more convenient to be able to charge all your batteries with one device.
Could you point me in the right direction please?

Hi Janek,

I think you have a non existing receiver ;-)

What range are you getting? Are you using a 1.2Ghz video link?

The battery mod is easy, just get a 2s lipo balance connector with some wires and solder a matching connector for your battery on the other end.

The antenna mod is tricky. I have the tools to do it properly and I have SMA connectors with wire and ufl connector. I don't have the ufl part that goes onto the RF board. I could solder the wire to the FR board like FrSky does, but with UFL conector its easier to swap out leads later.

EDIT: correction, I do have the ufl connectors also ;-)

I'm getting about 1100m of solid connection, afterwards RSSI falls and the radio goes bonkers. Stock TX/RX tapped out at 2820m in a straight flight.

I use 5.8 Ghz for video.

Some people reported having problems with SWR not being 0-1 after soldering the ufl connector onto the board.

As for the battery mod, I really do have two left hands for soldering, hence why I started this thread...There's nothing worse in the world than a tinkerer without manual skills.

Sort of a contradicion don't you think, a modeller without skills
Just buy a spare 2000mAh NiMH pack, easy as pie.

Which means I'm the perfect customer for a hobby store ;)

And I have the battery I want to use, I just need to find a place where I can have the plugs changed... Is that unheard of?

I was being sarcastic, hence the smiley ;)

I'm sure someone in your vicinity will be able to help you out.
E.g. being a store or another hobbyist.

The most difficult is obtaining the JST-EH connector (Shipping is more expensive!)

Make sure they get the polarity right, otherwise the magic smoke comes out.

I can always try Drone Specialist or Quartel, however they don't have particular affinity towards frSky radios and at Quartel the hate of some employees towards it almost borders on fanatical...

That shop is you've linked is half an hour away from me :)

You've got quite a collection, very nice. How do you like the Teksumo? You can send it via PM so as to not derail this topic any further.

Thx,
