Really nice and smooth. I am wondering whether you gonna use gel coat to make the hull.

Good question Dim. I understood that gelcoat in it's original package has a due date which is not very long. As it is not very cheap either, I could use epoxy as well I guess.
I am looking for the best approach, without spending a ton of money (as far as that is possible with a carbon build [emoji28])

This is true Jan, gel coat is not cheap. Epoxy could be a good solution to fill tricky spots like the strakes.

Yes, I will use thickened epoxy for thight corners. Either cotton flakes or chopped c.f. probably the last, as it is lighter [emoji41]

Om vast te oefenen met het maken van een product vanuit een mal, heb ik van Jan een mal van een vintage F1 tunnel kap geleend.

Na 4 lagen wax en een PVA film, heb ik de mal vandaag gelamineerd. Ik had van papieren malletjes al wat stukken gesneden, voor de achterkant en rond de cockpit.

Ik heb 3 lagen glasweefsel erin gelegd. 1x50gr, 1x80gr en 1x 110gr. In de scherpe hoeken heb ik verdikte epoxy met microballoons gebruikt.

Het was nog een beste klus. Nu laat ik het laminaat goed drogen en dan is het fingers crossed of de kap er goed uitkomt [emoji3]

Thanks Dim. I also wonder about the strength and weight.
This cowl does not fit my F1 T800 hull. I might have to ask Jan to help me out with a frame kit for this boat [emoji41]

Dank je en het is zeker leuk werk. Je moet het goed voorbereiden, alles bij de hand hebben. De epoxy is met dit warme weer maar 30 minuten te verwerken, dus je hebt een soort van tijdsdruk, terwijl je dat laminaat juist secuur in de mal moet leggen. Dat ligt mij opzich wel en het kapje is goed gelukt [emoji41][emoji106]

91 gram zonder af te werken. Niet slecht denk ik, het kapje is ook mooi sterk.

Thank you and it sure is nice work. You need to prepare it well, have everything at hand. The epoxy can only be processed in this hot weather for 30 minutes, so you have a kind of time pressure, while you have to precisely place that laminate in the mold. That suits me and the cap turned out well [emoji41][emoji106]

91 grams without finishing. Not bad I think, the cap is also nice and strong.

Magnificent result, so fun and interesting buildibg process and in general awesome project. Congratulations to both of you Jan(s).

The cowl is really super light and I guess it's surface will be super smooth...

Lekker bezig! Je kan ipv microballons ook koolstof (Carbon) snippers gebruiken voor in de hoeken dan is het werkstuk gelijk een stuk stijver en sterker. Als je de eerste laag legt met bv 20/40 gram dan heb je minder last van pitten kuiltjes. Pva film goed laten drogen anders zit het weefsel vast aan de mal. Ziet er goed uit altijd leuk met epoxy. Mooie boot ook.

Dit project gaat ook weer verder. Jan heeft de delen voor de plug grof gefreesd. Nu moeten ze op elkaar gelijmd worden en dan kan de vorm van de plug gefreesd worden.
