Waarom ga jij hem afbouwen, zou dat zelf niet snel uit handen geven. (zou het overigens wel snel aanpakken)

Uh-oh, that is me on that picture. I guess if my face is plastered all over the internet I might as well introduce myself to you nice people, Chris Davies-Garner, founder, CEO and chief designer at CD-Scaledesigns. I hope you don't mind me posting in English here, but my Dutch is too meagere to use :oops: .
Let me give you a quick run down here on how the B-17 was built.
I started designing it early 2003 using a German architectural CAD programme that I already owned as I am a professional architect based in Germany. It took me about the whole of 2003 to design and once the CAD files were ready, they were sent to an acquaintance in southern Germany who used them to cut out all the parts, and in Spring 2004 a very large box arrived at my doorstep with hundreds and hundreds of wooden parts of all shapes and sizes that would eventually be glued together and form a contraption that looks very much like a Boeing B-17.
I've always been a fan of Dave Platt and closely copy his recommended methods of construction when I scratch build a model. Therefore my B-17 was built up on a glass plate using 'stilts' to mount the formers to the worktop prior to strip planking. This first image here tonight shows the fuselage being planked using 3mm balsa strips.

In that picture you can see the two large center section formers (the ones with all those small holes) that would later take the wing spar extensions that slid like rails into grooves in these formers. We changed all this later and found it much easier to stick to the proven Gator Tubes, so this first picture is a little out-dated.
 
The wings are pretty much built the same way as the fuselage, i.e. firmly mounted to the table top. I am a fan of using jigs to build large parts as they (nearly) always guarantee straight and plumb parts. So the lower wing spars are glued to the table top, again using spacers, or 'stilts' for lack of a better word, and the wing ribs are then added and placed with an angle to facilitate accurate positioning. The engine nacelles are built separately and are dropped in place from the top before the top spars are added. Ply spar webs were added after this picture was taken.

By the time we reached this stage we became increasingly concerned with the chosen wing profiles which were symmetrical at the root and tip (100% scale, no washout!) but were changed later to a semi symmetrical at the tip to avoid the dreaded tip stall. We want our models to be as close as possible to the full size and only allow changes where they really can't be avoided like in wing profiles and 'decalage' etc.
 
The wings were then sheeted using 3mm balsa sheets.
Here the top sheeting is in place, the wing has been inverted and we are just about to start the lower side sheeting.

Here you can see the tank bays in the engine nacelles (we use two 6oz tanks per engine) and the flap which was still 1,5mm ply here. It was later replaced with 1,5mm grp which is much stiffer, but a lot heavier.
 
The size of our B-17 was determined by the available accessories like landing gear and coincidently Robart makes a beautiful landing gear set for the older Don Smith design in 1/10th scale, which we neatly implemented into our own design, as we weren't too fond of the idea of designing our own l/g. You can see the Robart l/g in action in Frank's videos further upwards.
 
This is what she looked to towards the end of 2004. Tomorrow I'll show you how we did the plastic parts.

@Frank, in het tweede filmpje zie je een witte plek op de band, precies waar de band de voorkant van het gat passeert. Is het gat groot genoeg?
