The Scamp was designed by H.L.Woods for amateur construction. Intended for grass strip operation, the all metal tricycle undercarriage aircraft is stressed to +6/-3 G for limited aerobatics. Powered by a VW engine, the prototype was first flown on August 21, 1973. Distributed from North Carolina, the aircraft has subsequently been built from plans or kits worldwide.
Currently two Scamps appear on the New Zealand active register (although there have been others). The first to be built was ZK-LDD (AAC/A572), constructed by Lionel Dixon and registered on May 7, 1981 (illustrated below). The aircraft was later damaged in a forced landing following a crankshaft failure. The Scamp was retrieved from an Eastern Bay of Plenty orchard in 1993 in a neglected state and put through a five year rebuild. The aircraft is currently with Les Worsely at Stratford. The other is Auckland based ZK-PET (AACA/680).
