Ju 287 Forward Swept Wing Bomber
This experimental forward swept wing heavy bomber had four Junkers Jumo 004 turbo-jet engines for propulsion. The Ju 287 v1 was ready for flight trials on August 16, 1944 mainly to prove the radical wing design concept and to see if careful placement of the engines could reduce the inevitable stresses on the wing structure. This unique aircraft had the fuselage of a He 177 bomber, a tail section from Ju 388 parts, landing gear from a Ju 352 and even nose wheels salvaged from downed B-24 Liberators!
During 17 flights this remarkable plane proved the forward swept wing design sound and work commenced at once on the Ju 287 V2, with six BMW 003A turbo-jets and fully retractable landing gear (the gear were fixed in the Ju 287 V1.) Final preparations were being made for flight trials when the site was over-run by allied troops.
V3 was to be the prototype for the eventual production version the Junkers Ju 287A, it never left the early design stages.
