The F-16XL was designed to replace the F-111. Two were built from FSD F-16As. The second one was fitted with a two-seat cockpit. Despite its improved range and runway usage ofer the F-16C, it was beaten in a flyoff by the F-15E Strike Eagle. The F-15E had two seats, two engines, and the LANTIRN night bombing system.
In 1988, the airplanes were transfered to NASA in an experiment to break the sound barrier without afterburners. Prior to this, only the B-58 Hustler had been up to the task. The first F-16XL became the first and only F100 powered F-16 to achieve supercruise. The F110 engined F-16XL-2 would repeat the test, and the F110 became the standard engine on all subsequent F-16s.
Afterwards, the F-16XLs were used in various test flight programs. The left wing of XL-2 was fitted with a special glove to test laminar flow control. XL-1 flew in support of the High Speed Civil Transport program. After the demise of HSCT in 1999, XL-1 got a new digital flight control system and is now flying with it as part of its test program.
