Dear All

I am not sure if I am in the correct sub-forum - apologies beforehand if I have posted in the wrong section.

Thank you to the moderators for accepting my request. I am a great enthusiast of historic Dutch model ships and would love to try my hand at building one.

My name is Heinrich Cornelissen - I'm a South African who works and lives in Nantong China. As I am sure you can see, my surname is of Dutch origin. My ancestors were among the first Settlers who came with Jan van Riebeeck to the Cape of Good Hope as founders of South Africa. Leendert Cornelissen was one of the original 9 Vrijburgers to which Van Riebeeck granted farms and Kees/Cees Cornelissen was a ship carpenter.

By profession, I am an English teacher - hence me teaching English in China. As a South African, my native language is Afrikaans which of course originated from Dutch. Even though I cannot speak Dutch, I can read and understand it perfectly. All replies in Dutch are most welcome!

At the moment, the virus is all people talk about. It is mostly limited to Wuhan Province (I am in Jiangsu), but there are more cases all over the country. Even the school where I teach has been closed with immediate effect until at least the 15th of February.
 
Thank you for the kind welcome, Maarten. It is much appreciated. I am very impressed by the Kolderstok models, so it will probably be one of them. I am looking at the build log of Hans Groenberg (De Seven Provincien) at the moment, but as a beginner, I am not sure if it will be too difficult for a first model.

Welkom Heinrich! Leuk dat je je aangemeld hebt op dit forum. Succes met het kiezen van een model. Het kan verstandig zijn om als eerste model een wat makkelijker schip te kiezen.

Over Zuid-Afrika, ik ben er 2 jaar terug geweest met een groepje vrienden. Een vriend van mij is er geboren. Hij heeft nog familie in Hekpoort en Johannesburg. Echt een prachtig land met prachtige natuur. Jammer om te zien hoe het land vervalt.

Dear Building Mouse, thank you so much for the warm welcome. Yes, South Africa is indeed a beautiful country and it is very sad to see the decay that has set in since 1994. I was born in Cape Town and spent most of my life teaching in the lovely town of Paarl, before moving to Kempton Park near Johannesburg.

Dear Koos, thank you very much for the warm welcome! I already feel at home! I am sure that many of my questions (and there will be many) will be answered on the forum. (I see that you are building the Batavia - another very good choice. South Africa was established courtesy of the VOC and their return ships (Dromedaris, De Reijger and Haerlem) .

Welkom op het forum Heinrich en leuk dat je zin hebt in het modelbouwen. En Kolderstok die ontwerpt ze hé... Wat dat aan gaat denk ik geen betere keuze om een mooi V.O.C. schip te scoren om te bouwen. Ik zelf ben begonnen met de Duyfken waarvan mijn verslag ook ergens rond zwerft op het forum. Dit was een mooie opstap om hier na aan de Zeven Provinciën te gaan beginnen.
Ik weet natuurlijk niet jou ervaringen en of deze hobby bij je past. Het zou natuurlijk zonde zijn om een groot pakket te nemen en er vervolgens achter te komen dat het niet je ding is. En ik zeg niet dat het bij jou zo vergaat hoor :) en ik hoop van niet want het is een prachtige hobby. Maar wat dacht je van de andere "kleinere" modellen van Kolderstok?

You did a wonderful build of her and I can only wish that I could accomplish such great success. All the Kolderstok models are beautiful: Batavia, Duyfken, Statenjacht,, Willem Barentsz, and then of course the "Big 7" as the ultimate. I will find your build log on the Duyfken and have a look!

Welkom Heinrich. Ik hoop dat je veel plezier met bouwen zult hebben hier.
Ga je een bouwpakket aanschaffen of ga je voor scratch bouw?
Ik ben intussen ook helemaal weg van de Nederlandse VOC tijd. Mijn volgende schip zal zeker een Nederlands schip zijn.
 
Hallo Stephan - thank you for your warm words of welcome. I am sure that I will have a lot of pleasure on the forum. I have already learnt so much in the day that I have been a member, that I really feel at home. I believe a that a scratch build at this stage will be beyond me so I have decided to buy a kit from Kolderstok. I spent the whole day reading and studying the build reports on the various Kolderstok models. Making a decision as to which one is difficult as they are all beautiful and each one is special in its own way).

Heinrich, deze heeft mooie modellen in zijn collectie en ook in diverse moeilijkheidsgraden, de Duyfken, schip van Barentz en het Statenjacht zijn volgens mij leuke start sets in die volgorde ;);)

De Batavia (die bouw ik momenteel) en de 7P zijn ook hele leuke pakketten maar meer bedoeld voor de gevorderde bouwer`....

Dus succes met je beslissing en uiteraard verwachten wij wel een verslag van je met heel veel foto's, daar zijn we dol op....

Als je een verslag start zet dat dan wel op de goede plaats, in het sub- forum "Bouwverslagen Historische Schepen"

Heel hartelijk welkom op dit forum. Er is tegenwoordig keuze genoeg in Hollandse schepen.
Ik ben zelf bezig met de Duyfken en de 7P. Het zijn beide mooie pakketten en de kennis hier op het forum helpt mij als beginnend bouwer heel veel.
Ik ben benieuwd wat jou keuze gaat worden.
Ik zal niet de enige zijn, als ik de hoop uitspreekt dat je een bouwverslag gaat bijhouden..

Dear Ruud. Thank you for your hearty welcome. It is clear to me that there is a really special feeling on the forum, which I appreciate very much. Whilst I am new to building historic sailing ships, I have done a fair bit of modelling in the past which will be of some help. I am extremely fortunate in that I have the most supportive Admiral as my wife, so I am also considering her opinion in the matter. Then there is also the historical background of the full-size ships that I am taking into account.

Geweldig Heinrich, goede keuze om voor Kolderstok te gaan. Dit zijn zeer mooie gedetailleerde modellen. Ben benieuwd naar de keuze van jouw. En kijk ook bij de site naar de authentieke blokken. Je kan in overleg deze bij je pakket krijgen. Dat is een meerwaarde voor je schip.
