So during my two off days (my naweek is in die middel van die week), I made some progress. First up was to continue planking the hull below the waterline and to prepare for closing the hull.



As I need more working space than my little work table affords me, the working surface in the kitchen was called for. Luckily the admiral is fully supportive of the build, so no problems there.



The closer I get to the end the more tricky it gets to anticipate how the final planking will pan out (no little pieces of graph paper meticulously marked out where each plank should go, for me). So far there are no instekers - (I might probably end up using one or either side), but it has required some forceful "manipulation" of the planks at time. In Suid-Afrika se ons: "Die planke het nie n pa of ma nie - so hulle moet doen wat ons wil he hulle moet doen!



I really like this close-up. The notenhout that Hans uses has some amazing colour and texture.

While waiting for the glue to dry I have embarked on building a long boat (bijboot) for the Haarlem. Historically, the Haarlem's long boat played a huge role in the Dutch gathering information of the Cape and in their general day-to-day-survival. I ordered the Kolderstok bijboot which at a length of 120mm is perfectly in scale.

The stern is planked with notenhout strips which are glued at an angle of 45 degrees.

I don't like it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the model for what it is, but - to me - it just lacks the WOW factor.

Tonight, I will order a long boat from Russia and see how that goes.

Mooi werk allemaal. En je longboats is netjes in elkaar gezet.
Ik vind de aanblik van het triplex ook iets minder, inderdaad de wow factor. Je had het kunnen wegschuren en met een stukje fineer kunnen afdekken. Of een donkere kleur geven.
Ook je bootje volgooien met touwklossen, roeispanen en attributen is een mogelijkheid

@Stephan Kertész I am so glad you understand what I am trying to say (it's not always easy to put "Wow factor" into words. Thank you for the link to the scratchbuild. I will certainly have a look at that.

 

Ik begrijp dat je de "wow-factor" mist voor het bij-bootje. De storende factor lijkt de binnen kiel, die had een stuk pils kan wat plankjes (buikdenning) een mooie afwerking zou geven. Zelf werk ik de binnen kiel ook weg hem te verlagen van simpel weg naar schuren de kiel niet meer zichtbaar is, Daarna ik de bodem afwerk met beplanking, als voorbeeld de laatste bootje wat ik bouw, geen kiel en de beplanking op de spantjes die eerste pils gemaakt;


De Haarlem is wel heel mooi beplankt,

Dit is hetzelfde bijbootje als die van jou. Ik heb hier mijn eigen aanpassingen aangedaan. De spantjes zijn boven de banken weggehaald en de banken lopen tot aan de huid. ook in voor en achtezijde zijn er dekjes gemaakt.

@Hans Groenenberg Hans, jou bijboot lyk prachtig - in n ander klas. Maar die ander kwessie is kleur. Ek soek meer na n ligter kleur hout soos Piet se bijboot.

I specifically did not cover the hatches in red cloth because I wanted them to be a background for the bijboot. The notenhout does not create enough of a contrast. That is why I said there is nothing wrong with the bijboot - it just doesn't work for this specific purpose.

Mijn tekst veranderd vanzelf in post 407....?? hoe kan dit? Als ik op bewerken klik krijg ik mijn originele tekst weer te zien, dus dan is bewerken ook niet nodig, ik snap er niets van.

Zojuist even bijgelezen in je verslag Heinrich, en ik vind dat je Haarlem er prachtig uit gaat zien. Mooi beplankt.
en een lichter ( van kleur ) bijbootje zou inderdaad veel mooier lijken. dat contrasteert mooier bij die mooie luiken.

 

Mooie vorderingen zo Heinrich, en tja zoals je ziet kun je met de bijboot alle kanten op, dus succes verder

 

@Pingu57 Baie dankie, Peter! Die bijboot is n interessante challenge maar ek is seker ons sal iets kry wat pas!

 

@Jaques Vordering is stadig maar seker, Koos! Ek is tevreden met wat klaar is, maar is nou aan't stoei met die galerij. Dis nou behoorlik een gepriegel om alles te kry om te pas.
