A visiting recreation of a Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 stands ready for some assistance from the MAM's 1919 Ford Model TT Hucks Starter, at the 2012 edition of "Biplanes and Triplanes".
Named for its inventor, Capt. Bentfield Hucks, RFC, a "Hucks" Starter is an auxiliary power unit used at initial start-up (in lieu of hand-propping) of a piston engine aircraft.
Power is transmitted to the aircraft via a chain-drive shaft. Fitted into a special hub, attached to the propeller mounting, the apparatus incorporates a simple protruding claw clutch. When in use, power from the truck's engine is transmitted to the aircraft engine, via the hub, up to the point of ignition. The higher RPMs of the now-running engine automatically disengage the clutch.
Thanks to recent repairs by members of the AACA (Tidewater Region), the MAM's Hucks Starter is once more ready for duty. You can view this unique motor vehicle seven days a week, from 0900hrs to 1700hrs, as part of your guided tour of our WWI Hangar.
